Italy-based Guala Closures, the largest producer of safety screw caps for spirit and wine bottles , signed a lease for 11,000 square feet of space at 2300 South Watney Way and adds to the growing number of wine-related companies finding a new home in Fairfield industrial business parks. Guala started in 1954 and currently has 4,000 employees in 25 plants on four continents. Last year alone, Guala produced over 13 billion bottle cap closures.
Guala is installing its small-run technology which allows smaller wineries to order custom caps. Runs on the equipment can be as small as a few thousands caps. By comparison, minimum orders from Guala’s nearest plant in Mexico is 100,000 closures. Hiring for the new Fairfield plant is currently under way and Guala expects to employ 15 employees initially. Guala expects to be operational by June of this year.
With the addition of Guala, Fairfield continues to grow its wine industry cluster. In the past year alone, wine-related companies including Bruni Glass, Encore Glass, and Saxco International have leased close to 1 million square feet of industrial space, bringing the total amount of wine industry leased space in Fairfield to over 2.5 million square feet.
